We’re controlling you. It’s for your own safety.

Nothing gets my blood boiling more than shit like this. I just got this email at work detailing new US Customs and Homeland Security measures regarding laptops.

US Customs New Laptop Measure

US Customs has a new procedure were they can seize your laptop when arriving in the US. They may copy your information for analysis.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has the authority to seize a laptop and retain it long enough to assess whether the individual is taking anything unlawful across the border. Anyone who challenges a DHS or Transportation Security Administration (TSA) official as they execute their responsibilities will only generate suspicion that the individual has something to hide, which will only provoke DHS/TSA to be even more curious.

“If you haven’t done anything wrong, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.”

Is that supposed to make me feel better? What is the government’s definition of “wrong” and who has the power to change it?  Is this honestly necessary? Of all the things we could do to combat “terrorism,” our government finds it absolutely necessary to invade the privacy of everyone coming into our country with a laptop (citizens or not) and download all of their files? How is this a security measure, and not another layer of control put on us? Remember: don’t complain, because only terrorists are complainers.
